Mowing down the everbearing raspberries. They will fruit in September and October.

Will strawberries be earlier this year with the warm winter ?
1 day ago Millar Berry Farms 1
Lynda Lewis, one would think so, but too early to say for sure. A lot can happen between now and June.  I am content to leave those things in the Lord's capable hands. It's my job to be ready.

Do we trim raspberry bush now? Everything looks dead, how do I know what to trim? Any help appreciated.
1 week ago Millar Berry Farms
Nicole Jean Dormant, not dead. https://hortnews.ext...rune-raspberries
1 week ago Millar Berry Farms 1
Take any dead canes or plant material out for sure, then just trim them as you need to keep them manageable.

My June raspberries grew to 8 feet long by the end of the summer. I trimmed them back to 5 feet, then the side shoots sprouted and are now 4-5 feet. How far back to trim them. They get sun till 12, then 4-6 so don’t know if they are reaching for the sun. I have also added many bags of composted manure. Suggestions? What are u trimming yours to today?
2 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms 1
Marg Steers, we are cutting out the old dead canes and thinning them out by removing any thin or damaged canes.  If you cut more than 25% of your canes you will reduce your yields. It sounds like you are doing well with plant nutrition. 👍

Did anyone else try freezing our delicious corn on the cob whole? I tried it for the first time after a customer encouraged me to do it. It was delicious 😋
4 weeks ago Helen Nairn 1
We did it first time this year! It is awesome to have mid winter !!
4 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms
Helen Nairn so you enjoyed it? Did you microwave the cobs?
4 weeks ago Helen Nairn 1
No we put them frozen into boiling water for about 10 minutes. We had a summer picnic with family at Christmas!
    4 weeks ago Monica Pennings
I have some.in the freezer but haven't tried it yet.
4 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms 1
Monica Pennings give us your opinion when you do try it!
    4 weeks ago Bill Ravensberg
Looks good! My grandmother used to freeze corn on the cob and we'd have it with the big family Christmas. Always a treat way back in the day.
    4 weeks ago Sheila M Stevenson 2
Will have to try this summer
    4 weeks ago Brittany Yolkowskie-Brown 5
It's even better when you Blanche it and shave it off the cob into a freezer bag than freeze it!
4 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms 1
Brittany Yolkowskie-Brown that's what I've always done! Just wanted to try this...it was delicious but missing the Crunch!!
    4 weeks ago Mandy Shipley
How did you cook it? From frozen? Remove husk?
4 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms
Mandy Shipley you can microwave it in the husk for about 3 minutes or husk it and put in boiling water. Timing is everything.
4 weeks ago Alisha Stout 1
I'm going to have to try this out, never thought of freezing the cobs of corn
4 weeks ago Betty Joynt Rutledge
Do you take off husk then wrap it.

Betty Joynt Rutledge leave it in the husk to freeze, but cut off the ends .
4 weeks ago Betty Joynt Rutledge
    Sylvia Millar thanks

I am not sure how my mom found your mom. But they knew each other shortly after she moved to the area. My mom was from Manitoba and her parents were from Russian and AustriaHungary. We lived in Port Stanley and would drive in. And we stopped by for many years and gathered fruit and veggies. And my mom always stopped and visited with your mom. Always made my mom smile!
When I see my mother later, I will tell her.
    So sorry for your lose.

Helen Millar (née Steczyszyn), 98, of Lambeth (London, Ontario), passed away peacefully on December 22nd, 2023, at Westmount Gardens. She was born on August 10th, 1925, in Czer Jany, Poland, to Mykieta (Mike) and Pelagia (Polly Pendileuk) Steczyszyn. Helen met her beloved husband, Peter Millar, in Toronto, and they married in Winnipeg on June 12th, 1947, at Holy Ghost Church. They moved to Sudbury, where they welcomed their first two sons, Greg and Dennis. In 1954, they relocated to London, and had two more sons, Bill and Peter. Helen and Peter bought a plot of land from the Zabehaylos and started Millar Berry Farms in 1961. They built a house on the farm in 1967 and sold their house in London to officially become farmers. Helen continued to work on the farm into her 90’s, until health issues required her to move into a long-term care home. Helen was an exceptional home-maker, raising four boys, and making the best borscht, cabbage rolls, perogies, and apple pie. She also outworked most everyone on the farm, from picking berries to helping in the market. She was an avid card player, always having the best luck. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her Baba. She also loved to sing. Helen is survived by her sons Greg, Bill (Sylvia), and Peter (Erna, and children Luke, Janna, and Amelia); her daughter-in-law Brenda (Dennis); her grandchildren Jeremiah (Kathleen), Daryl (Jason), Matt, Caleb (Grace), and Joshua (Susan); and her great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Ronan, Link, Raelynn, Reggie, and Rowan. She is predeceased by her husband Peter; her son Dennis; her daughter-in-law Debbie (Peter); her granddaughter Sherri (Peter); her siblings Anne, Mary, Jeanette, John, and Olga; and her parents Mike and Polly. Visitation will be held at McFarlane & Roberts Funeral Home on December 27, 11am-1pm followed by a 30 minute service officiated by Pastor Steve Kerr. The family would like to thank the staff at Westmount Gardens for their care and compassion. Helen will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

1st year Raspberry didn't produce because it didn't get cross pollination. Do I still cut back the stalk?
22 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms
Kaitlyn Northmore You generally don't get much, if any, fruit in the first year. Just cut out any dead canes, and any dead material off the ends in the spring.
    22 weeks ago Kaitlyn Northmore
Millar Berry Farms thanks so much!
22 weeks ago Millar Berry Farms
Kaitlyn Northmore, raspberries are biannual, canes that come up in the spring bear fruit the following summer, then that cane will die off and should be cut out in the fall or early in the spring, as soon as the snow disappears.
